Kakapo Parrot (Strigops habroptilus)
With Owl like features the kakapo has unusual soft plumage and facial disc of bristle like feathers. The Maori name Kakapo means night parrot.
The worlds heaviest and only flightless parrot is up to 60cm long and weighing up to 3.5 kgs. He lives mainly on the ground but can climb trees and can parachute down from the trees using its wings for balance and braking. Nocturnal, solitary and secretive. The Kakapo parrot has sturdy legs, which are useful for balance, while walking and running. The females are smaller than the male. Live for up to and more than 60 years.
Habitat: Live alone but travel several kilometers in the night.
Breeding: Specially dug out hollows made by the male, then the most remarkable display of the bird world takes place. Kakapo mate once every three to four years.
Population: 2006 only 62 Kakapo left in the world.
