Kakapo

Description: Endemic bird
63 cm., male 2.5 kg., female 2 kg., moss green above, greenish yellow below, mottled with fine brown and yellow bars, owl-like facial disk.
Where to find:
Probably the only real opportunity to see a Kakapo is as a Department of Conservation volunteer, although one of the 86 remaining flightless parrots will be taken from his Codfish Island home to Ulva Island for selected visitors to view from late August, 2006. Both islands are close to Stewart Island.

Other common names: Parson bird, poe bee-eater, New Zealand creeper, koko, mocking bird.
Description: Endemic bird
30 cm., male, 120 g., female, 90 g., looks black but in the light has green, bluish-purple and bronze coloring, lacy collar of white filaments and white throat tufts, black legs and curved black bill, white wing bar, sexes alike, juvenile dull slate black with glossy wings and tail, grayish-white throat, lacks white throat tufts or poise.
Where to find :
Common throughout New Zealand but scarce east of the Alps in the South Island.

15cm; 25g male, 22g female; completely black.
